Dunfyboy's Sugar Hill Mix

(156 downloads)

It's been a strange month. I've only upped a few mixes and, as a result, the downloads weren't even in treble figures till a few days ago when my DJ Shadow Mix was posted on the Solesides website. I really need to start spreading the word about my site. If only I wasn't so bloody lazy!!!

This will probably be the last mix of the month. It's a tribute to one of the oldest of old school hip hop labels - Sugar Hill Records.

It's first release, Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", came out in 1979. It sampled the bass line from Chic's "Good Times" which led to the label being sued. It wasn't the only lawsuit filled against the label in it's all too brief existence. Even Grandmaster Flash sued. This, along with contract disputes, caused many of the artists to leave and the label folded in 1986.

A short but sweet experience then. 20 plus years on, some of the rhymes may sound a little dated (I guess the star sign thing worked with the ladies at the time) and I never could work out why having butter on your toast was bragging or being boastful, but the label gave us some true classics and I think it's fair to say the world of hip hop would have turned out differently without it.

The first Sugar Hill track I heard was as a 10 year old back in 1984. My dad had a C90 he used to play in the car with Kreftwerk's "Autobahn" on one side and various other songs, including "White Lines", on the other. So you can thank my old man for this mix.

Enjoy.

Another gorgeous mix there, keep it up.
No problem, your podcast is legendary, so it was an honour to spread the word (I am the author of House Music 101).

Great stuff

Remember to check out www.dunfyboysmixes.blogspot.com for future mixes. There's a couple on there already and more on the way.

I've been listening to dance music for ever (at least, it feels like it) and mixing for the past 15 years. It was hearing Eon's "Spice" that really hooked me, followed by other classics like Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" and Orbital's "Chime". After that, I fell in love with the breakbeat-driven rave tunes like The Prodigy's "Your Love" and Urban Shakedown's "Some Justice". This lead onto early English happy hardcore and the harder sounds coming out of Scotland & Holland.

In the second half of the 90s, happy hardcore got cheesier and all hardcore seemed to be turning into gabba. The countless remixes meant there wasn't really anything new for me and I pretty much gave up on hardcore in 97/98, turning to trance instead. Luckily, I'd gotten into big beat two or three years before that so, plenty of breakbeats there to keep me happy. This lead onto nu-school breaks and the dirty, heavier sound of electro house has got me back into house.

So far, my mixes have been download in the UK, Ireland, Finland, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Serbia, Greece, Morocco, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Brasil, Argentina, Canada, the US and Mexico. It's kinda weird to think of all the little zeroes and ones from my computer spreading all over the world and (hopefully) making a few people smile along the way. If your country's missing from the list, let me know.

After a little Googling, I see my podcast has been mentioned on a few sites and forums, no thanks to me. Thanks to all who have spread the word.

I hate to sound like an attention whore, but it takes time to create and upload these mixes (not to mention make the artwork) so if you download a mix or sign up to my rss feed below, please take the time to leave a comment. It's good to hear from you and find out what you think of the mixes here.

Now, get downloading.
